Curious Ear organise gigs and workshops of improvised music in Manchester.
It was founded in 2017 by David Birchall & Andrew Cheetham.
We became a CIC in 2023.
Nowadays day to day things are ran by David with the huge support of some amazing in/formal volunteers/friends and freelancers who work for us on funded gigs.
We started the series as a monthly gig inspired by the UK tradition of monthly improvised music clubs and our own backgrounds in self organising DIY rock/punk/noise/weird musics. This was so we could play improvised music with guests from out of town and locally. This still happens as a DIY door gig at The Peer Hat most months.
If you want to play have a read of this before you contact us.
Roughly once a year we aim to book a series of gigs which is supported by grant funding meaning we can pay everyone involved properly. This is organised by us and we invite artists we want to work with. In the past this work has been supported by Arts Council England and The British Council. These gigs have taken place at St. Margaret’s Church, Ascension Church and Platt Fields Market Garden.
Sign up to the Curious Ear mailing list below. We send out one or two an emails a month usually about a week before a concert.
